Characteristics of Ryuei-ryu eku techniques

Bo expertise required:

The eku, due to its shape, requires a high degree of skill to use effectively. The techniques are an extension of the Ryuei-ryu bo training, but with greater complexity due to the asymmetrical paddle.

Versatile striking:

The eku can be used for a wide range of attacks. The sharp wooden edge of the blade can be used for slashing, while the tip is used for thrusting, similar to a spear or halberd.

Effective blocking:

The paddle portion provides a larger surface area for blocking and parrying. The weight distribution also allows for powerful sweeping and defensive movements.

Circular movements:

The asymmetrical and unbalanced nature of the eku is used to the practitioner's advantage with circular, whipping motions that increase power and unpredictability.

Sand flicking:

One signature technique involves scooping up sand or water with the flat surface of the blade and flicking it into an opponent's face to create a momentary distraction before a strike.

The eku is a boat oar and a unique weapon within the Ryuei-ryu kobudo system. Like the other weapons of Ryuei-ryu, its use incorporates the style's distinctive Chinese-influenced circular movements, evasive footwork, and blending of hard and soft techniques. The founder of the style, Norisato Nakaima, secretly passed down the weapon's techniques within his family after learning them in China.
